New Rector has Been SelectedBelow is a transcript of the anouncement made by Churchwarden Amanda Wells on Mothering Sunday:-
‘The Bishop, Patrons, Archdeacon, Area Dean, Andrew and I are happy to announce that a formal offer has been made and accepted by the Rev Paul Gully, vicar of St George Oakenrod and St Michael Bamford. There are all the usual checks to be made so we cannot yet say when the induction will take place. We would ask you to pray for Paul and Carol as they prepare to join us in the parish.’

Farlington Music Festival 2009The full line-up for the Farlington Music Festival 2009 has just been released. Now in its second year, the Festival will again comprise 10 concerts over consecutive weekends, with a variety of musical styles and something to please everyone. All concerts will be held at the Church of the Resurrection, Penrhyn Avenue, Drayton, PO6 2AP, with the money raised going to the parish buildings projects, helping to improve the facilities the parish can offer to the local community. Making welcome returns this year are Highbury Area Band, and local band Dragonfly who will have a different line-up of special guests with them. Debut performances at this years Festival come from Horns in Harmony, Denmead Brass Band, The Madding Crowd, Anemos Wind Quintet, Donna Michelle & Phil Tebbs and local band Isthison. The organisers are particularly pleased to announce an organ concert by the organist of Rochester Cathedral, Roger Sayer. In addition, an evening with Tom Kennar, local Anglican priest at St Marks, North End, and an accomplished musician and entertainer, looks likely to be one of the highlights of the festival. Cathedral Flower Festival- 23rd to 26th July 2009A group from the Church of the Resurrection took part in the Cathedral four day Flower Festival based on the theme of the Circus. They decorated the two large candle sticks each side of the large west door with a clown and flower arrangement each side. it was a wonderful vibrant event with some very imaginative arrangements. |
Trevor’s Ordination and First Communions- 4th. and 5th. July 2009Our curate Trevor Filtness was ordained priest at the Cathedral on Saturday 4th. July. He celebrated his first Eucharists at The Church of the Resurrection, and at St Andrews Church on Sunday 5th. July. He was assisted at the eucharists by lyn Comerford, and his course supervisor the Revd. Karen Schmidt, the Bishop’s Chaplain, preached at both Eucharists. Rector Leaving in August- Sunday 17th May 2009It is with sadness that the editor has to report that the Rector of Farlington Parish, Steve Summers announced that he would be leaving in August for a new post. In the June Parish Newsletter he wrote:- “It was with sadness that I announced my resignation as Rector of Farlington on Sunday 17th May. My last Sunday in the parish will be Sunday 16th August. I am leaving to take up a post in Guildford diocese as Principal ot the Local Ministry Programme- it is based at Diocesan House. We hope to move there at the beginning of September: at my time of leaving I will have been in post for seven years. During our time at Farlington we have made some great friends and seen some interesting challenges! My final service is quite aome way off and in the meantime there is a great deal to do. Steve and Heather.” |
Church of the Resurrection Hall Grand Opening- Saturday 13th June 2009The Re-furbished Hall and Kitchen at the Church of the Resurrection, together with the new Parish Office, Committee Room and Toilet Block were opened by the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth. Terry Hall, accompanied by her Consort, her husband John Hall. She cut the red ribbon at the front door and spoke of the value that church halls are to the community. There was a large crowd in attendance at the ceremony, including one of the Patrons of Farlington Parish, Edward Nugee QC, his wife and son, and Sarah McCarthy-Fry, MP for Portsmouth North. Inside there were various stalls and displays by parisioners, and some of the organisations who use the hall. In the church there was also a Tap Dancing demonstration and a Karate Demonstration. Donations and money raised on the day came to over £900. |
Court Lane School Visit to Church of the Resurrection- Tuesday 8th July 1008 The annual visit of pupils from four classes of Court Lane Infant School took place at The Church of the Resurrection. They were shown round by the Rector Steve Summers, and members of the congregation who explained all the different features of the church. In the “washing-up” session at the end of the morning the children were asked if they had any questions about this impressive building. The question which raised the most interest was to the Rector “what make of motor-bike do you ride”. |
