The Nugee Foundation

The Nugee Family and Farlington: A Longstanding Connection

The Nugee family’s link with Farlington stretches back more than two centuries. It began in 1782, when Griffith Richards arrived as curate. His memorial can still be seen on the west wall of St Andrew’s Church. Griffith, his son Edward Tew Richards, and his grandson Arthur James (A.J.) Richards served the parish continuously for 143 years. A.J. Richards held the dual role of Rector and patron, continuing the family’s deep involvement in parish life.

Passing on the Patronage

After A.J. Richards’ death, the patronage passed to his daughter, Miss Gwendolen Richards, who lived for many years in Leigh Road, Havant. On her death, she left the patronage jointly to:
     • Dr Leatherdale, father of Sarah Wynter Bee (the parish’s current individual patron), and
     • The granddaughter of A.J. Richards.

When the granddaughter died in 1993, her son Edward (“Ted”) Nugee inherited the patronage.

The Nugee Foundation

In 2007, Ted established a small charity — The Nugee Foundation — and transferred the patronage to its trustees: himself and his four sons, John, Christopher, Andrew, and Richard. When Ted died in 2014, his sons became the remaining trustees and continue the family’s historic role today.

The Current Trustees

  • Christopher is a High Court judge;
  • Andrew runs a business known as Imagineear, which makes multimedia guides to museums, exhibitions and cities (and much else besides); and
  • Richard is a retired British Army officer who served as Chief of Defence -  People.
