So what positive activity has there been so far?

The Eco Team

We have a team headed up by Miriam Sampson which has been working very hard behind the scenes looking at the survey, and completing various pieces of work.  The Eco team has also played an active part in the Portsmouth Diocese Eco Group headed up by Rachel Houlberg and the Portsmouth Ecumenical Climate Change Action Group.

We have achieved our Silver A Rocha award for both churches, see previous page for more details about the A Rocha scheme.

  • The Eco team is working closely with the PCC and the fabric committee team to make our buildings more energy efficient and eco-friendly.
  • We have created a downloadable leaflet ‘Recycling in and around Farlington parish’ which shows what can be recycled and where (including in our donations to the local school for its project). Download the leaflet here or pick up a printed copy in church.

  • We use Fairtrade tea, coffee and sugar for the after-service refreshments and other community events. We are using eco-friendly products for cleaning in both halls.

Water butts have been installed in the churchyard at St. Andrew’s church and in the grounds at Church of the Resurrection

  • There are now two compost bins at St Andrew’s church and another two at Church of the Resurrection.

  • We now have Farlington’s biggest bug hotel (probably) in St. Andrew’s churchyard where a tree felled during Storm Eunice has been cropped and the stump has been left for the benefit of the wildlife.

  • An area of lawn to the west side of Church of the Resurrection has now been lifted and sown with wildflower seeds.

  • Bird feeders have been installed in St Andrew’s churchyard, and bird boxes have been sited in the most appropriate locations in the grounds of Church of the Resurrection.

  • The lights in St. Andrew’s church are now nearly all LED bulbs, with the remainder to be changed when they burn out. The position is more complicated at the Church of the Resurrection, but the uplighters all have LED bulbs now.
  • The fluorescent tube lighting in the choir vestry has been replaced with LED equivalents and reflective foil has been placed behind the radiators on the outside walls of the church.

In the area on the corner of Brecon Avenue, 14 new saplings were planted, including young birch, rowan, hazel and hawthorn trees. The saplings were donated by The Tree Council. We lost about three of these and shrubs have been planted in their place.

We have used 5 old tyres to create planters for flowers, shrubs and bulbs, depending on the season.

The Church of the Resurrection bug B&B is now open for our creepy-crawly guests

We have a dedicated Eco-church board at the back of the Church of the Resurrection which is frequently updated with the latest information on environmental and global issues with suggestions for local activity.
